In this unit, we will be studying the solar system, including the sun, planets, stars, and moons. Although you have already been introduced to many of the bodies and concepts that are significant to the study of our solar system in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade, we will be learning about many new concepts for the first time and will be revisiting earlier concepts to study study them more in depth. Through this unit, you will continue to describe how the properties of the system are different from the properties of the bodies that make up the solar system. The solar system includes the sun, planets and many other objects that are affected by the sun’s gravity. Within this system, other systems exist. An example would be Saturn and all the moons located around the planet. The solar system is enormous, and the objects within it range in size from particles of dust to bodies as large as the Sun.
